Macroalgae for the Marine Refugium / Sump
The following marine algae species are a great choice to keep them in a Sump / Refugium, with an extra refugium light for them to grow. They are the first choice when it comes to reducing the Nitrate and Phosphate levels in the marine reef aquarium, They are a great addition to any fish only aquarium or seahorse tank, as they grow very fast.
All our Algae disease free and premium quality. They may come with hitchhikers not limited to Copepods and Rotifers, as those beneficial critters love the protected environment of our planted marine tanks.
Beside of the Chaetomorpha / Chaeto algae species, these algae are mainly invasive saltwater algae species, which would need in an Aquarium Tank Display much more work to keep them restrained. Thus they are perfect to be placed in the restrained area of a marine Sump / Refugium area.
If you have a typical Refugium / Sump setup with 3 chambers we would recommend to use the middle chamber for the macro algae, so the parts with the return pump / protein skimmer will stay algae free. As well we recommend using a coarse filter before the last chamber. so no algae can enter your tank display.
Beside of the great advantages of reducing the Nitrate and Phosphate Level in the tank, they will as well provide a perfect environment for Copepods and Rotifers too and help to increase the population of those beneficial cultures.
Surely it is possible to add almost all of our marine macro algae we offer to the Sump / Refugium, but we would recommend much more green macro algae species, as they will grow faster, which means they will lower more effective the Phosphate / Nitrate levels.
Red Macro Algae species could be placed in the sump / refugium too, but they grow mainly much slower than the green algae species, and they are in our opinion almost to beautiful to hide them in a sump / refugium. But when you have a open refugium / sump tank as a planted refugium show aquarium, they will surely look great in it.
